August CoCoRaHS rainfall data shows Ripton and Hancock formally drenched

Rainfall in central Vermont towns, August 2023

“Since June 1st, more than 33″ of rainfall was recorded by VT-AD-30 in Ripton and VT-AD-20 in Hancock. Aside from locations in Puerto Rico, Guam, and Florida, these were the wettest spots in the US this summer in the CoCoRaHS network!” says Vermont meteorologist and CoCoRAHS South Central Region Coordinator Seth Kutikoff in an August 31 email to CoCoRaHS volunteers.

Used by the National Weather Service, CoCoRaHS is a community network of trained volunteers who report and record precipitation events from their own backyard. The more trained volunteers an area has, the more comprehensive a portrait the service can paint.

With over 33 inches of rainfall reported between June 1 and August 31 for Ripton and Hancock, with around three of those inches observed early the morning of August 4, from the isolated Addison County storm the evening of August 3.

President Biden announced on Friday a request for an additional $4 billion to the disaster relief fund for the summer's climate-related disaster events in Vermont, Louisiana, Hawaii, and elsewhere. “Given the intensity of disaster activity around the nation – including fires on Maui, in Louisiana, and across the country, massive flooding in Vermont, and now a major hurricane that hit Florida and the Southeast – the Administration is seeking an additional $4 billion for FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund (DRF),” an Office of Management and Budget (OMB) spokesperson said in a statement.
