Tuesday, March 21— Spring in the valley and bracing for Mud Season

Weather: spring continues in earnest with temps in the low 40s during the day, dropping just below freezing at night, so if you’re sugaring, expect a good run today. If you’re still snow-birding, you’d better head out while you still can! Last week’s snow means you’ll get another few days before you’re skiing over slush. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Yes, it’s finally starting to feel like spring in the valley and I’m bracing myself for another endless mud season as soon as the ground gets a little squishy. Mud notwithstanding, I’m still looking forward to running out on the trails. What are you most looking forward to this spring?

March 20-24 — this week’s civic meetings

Town governments have re-organized after Town Meeting Day earlier this month, and are back in full swing. That said, town business is relatively quiet this week. If you’re planning to attend these meetings, please let me know.

Tuesday, March 21: The Hancock Selectboard will meet at 6:00 PM at the town office at via Zoom. Conversation will continue on fire service access to properties along Route 125 as well as ARPA funding. The full agenda is here.

Also Tuesday, the Granville-Hancock school board (GHUD) will hold a special meeting at 6:00 PM at the Granville town offices and over Google Meet. The board will be discussing the warning for its annual meeting on May 9 as well as the results from their annual audit. The full agenda can be found here.

That’s it for this week! Again, if you plan to attend, please let us know. We’re working on the ability to provide audio transcriptions and are looking for help crowdsourcing recordings — we can compensate!

    Rochester town offices closed

Note that the Rochester town offices are closed due to Covid this week — if you have outstanding town business, please call 802-767-3631 and leave a message, and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.

    Save the pup date

The annual rabies clinic is coming up next Wednesday, March 29, at the Hancock Fire Department from 5 until 7PM. Dr. Roy Hadden will be administering rabies vaccines for $15, and distemper shots for $20. Any questions call Mark Belisle at 802-279-0820.

You can’t get there from here — and neither can your mail

Rural America Grows Weary of Waiting for Its Mail  — The Wall Street Journal. We continue to witness mail delays despite the wonderful staff at our valley’s local post offices, and apparently we’re not alone. This article from today’s Wall Street Journal confirms that this problem isn’t isolated to our valley or even to Vermont’s rural towns. According to the article, Vermont’s congressional delegation wrote to US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in December to address concerns. According to Senator Peter Welch, “Most of us are realizing it’s not just Vermont, it’s not just Colorado, it’s all across rural America.”

YOUR DAILY GROUSE: what’s your biggest mail headache from the past couple of years? We’ll publish the best (which are admittedly the worst) next Monday.

Stay tuned for Thursday’s edition where we’ll drum up the weekend in area restaurants and events. And stay out of the ruts!
